Traveling on a Budget and One of the Most Beautiful Beaches in the World

Isla Mujeres, Mexico –

After almost two full days of trying to get money wired to me and canceling all of the credit and debit cards, I decided to head out to one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Isla Mujeres, Mexico. People often ask me, “How much did you spend on your last trip?” My most common answer is “I have no idea”. Well, I also thought that other than just visiting some of the top hostels in Mexico, I’d track how much money I spent. I consider myself well read on the topic of budget traveling, but I don’t always follow the plan. I am not your average backpacker traveling in between college and my first real job. I do, however, spend very little on flights and accommodation. From this blog on, I’ll update everything I spend at the end of the blog post. As for Isla Mujeres, I’m going to keep this blog post short and let the pictures speak for themselves.

Also, I am writing this from a rooftop beach bar at the top of Hostel 3B in Playa del Carmen. Great, high-rated hostel but much more of a party hostel than Mezcal. There was lots of banging on doors during the night probably from guests losing their keys. Each guest is given a regular key to their dorm room with no keychain. I can see how that would be easy to lose especially for a beachside party hostel. Otherwise, the place is very clean, comfortable beds, free breakfast, and a friendly staff.

Backing out of the dock, we were serenaded by a singer with an acoustic guitar on the top deck of the ferry. I’ve posted the video on my youtube site.

“La Triguena” (the brunette) statue. She was one of five sisters and it is been said that she was a willowy woman with green eyes, white skin bronzed by the Caribbean sun and long, straight brown hair. Called “La Triguena” (the brunette), many men fell in love with her including Fermin Mundaca. He set out to win her, the arches above the gates were dedicated to her, naming them “The Entrance of the Triguena” and “The Pass of the Triguena” in hopes his wealth and power would win the local beauty 37 years younger than himself.

A large pink hotel in the middle of the ocean.

After a long, stressful two days after losing my wallet, it was time for a Pina Colada on the beach. I had a one hour massage for only 35 bucks right after on the beach before jumping into the ocean.

All that worked up an appetite so I decided to stay on the Island for dinner before hopping on the ferry back to Cancun. When I was planning my trip I didn’t remember seeing any hostels listed on the island. I’d recommend staying here at least one night. The place is a little crowded but the beaches are hard to beat.

As promised…here is my budget so far.

Day 1:

  • One-way United Airlines flight from Lafayette, Louisiana to Houston, Texas to Cancun, Mexico – $21.73 plus 17,500 flight miles.
(If you want to know how I do this, you need to keep following my blog and share with your friends).
  • Uber ride to the airports from Cajun Hostel Cypress (my house) – $5
  • Large breakfast at the airport because I was running late – $15
  • United miles accelerator offer – When I checked in for my flight I was offered 5,ooo miles for $135 so I took it – $135
  • Lunch/Dinner at a tourist trap restaurant at right outside the airport – $19
  • Bus from airport to bus station near the hostel – $5
  • Dorm bed in 4 bed mixed dorm at Mezcal Hostel$26 (free dinner and a good thing because I had no $)

Day one Total = $226.73

Running total = $91.73 (This will be the total I will use since the flight miles are not really part of my trip, but I thought it would be good information to add)

Day 2 – Coming Soon!
