My First Impression of Southeast Asia – Singapore

Singapore

Singapore is simple in that it is easy to get around and find things to do. It is not simple as far as diversity, the city has plenty for an adventurer to explore. Call it city, call it a state, call it an island, call it a country, whatever you want to call it, I would recommend going there. Singapore has tons to do and a little bit for everyone. Although it is much more expensive than the other parts of southeast Asia, Singapore is clean, safe, and diverse. It was to be my first stop on a two and half  month journey in southeast Asia. Little did I know that I was going to spend 3 full straight days in airports and airplanes with out going outside or sleeping much. When flying out of Lafayette, LA , you or either going to Dallas, Houston, or Atlanta. If there is bad weather in Texas, you are going to be delayed. Down pours and flooding in Houston caused a snowball effect canceling several flights in the Dallas and Houston area. This caused me to miss my connection to San Francisco and in turn I spent most of the night (6 and a half hours) waiting in the United Airlines customer service line  and sleeping in the chairs and on the floors of the airport. The quickest route to Singapore from Lafayette is supposed to take just over 25 hours. I felt as though I handled the situation well until my 60th hour and finding out I was not going to receive my bags for a few days. A fun little shopping trip, which is something that I don’t do a lot of, and a $200 reimbursement from the airline made everything OK.

Enough about that, let’s see Singapore!

Some of the highlights you will see in this gallery are from the Botanical Gardens (if you are into plants it’s a must, if not skip it), the Asian Civilizations Museum, the Peranakan Museum, Gardens by the Bay, and random pics through China Town and Little India. If you are with the kids, you could definitely spend two full weeks here. I could have spent a few more days as I was here for 5 total. I skipped the Zoos and Universal Studios. I posted my “to do” list in the gallery. If it has a straight line through it I did it. If it has an X it was a place that I decided not to go. If not marked at all, those are places or things I missed for one reason or another but will catch next time I’m in the area. I would not have any reservations about returning to Singapore. I would also be remised not to mention my 5 star hostel experience. Dream Lodge is a capsule/pod style hostel in Singapore. The ratings on airbnb and Trip Advisor speak for themselves. Unlike a dorm bed, you have much more privacy as you are in you own little pod. They even have pods for two! The management of this hostel was also superb and served free continental breakfast every morning. My only drawback was because of the jet lag, which was intensified because of my travel situation, that my sleep schedule was way off. It would be very difficult to take a nap in the pods as the AC is turned off during the day time. At night I slept like a baby. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. Singapore is very hot and very humid in June. If you are from south Louisiana it can be compared to our summer times. There’s so much fun stuff to do here you kinda just get over it…

While in Singapore, I also visited, Pulau Ubin Island. I decided it was worthy a of separate blog post. Check it out here!

  1. One of the reasons I started flying Delta in the first place was to avoid connections in Texas. Atlanta can be busy and crazy, but it always felt like a better than 50% chance of getting screwed by weather in Texas. (Last time I went to Hawaii, we were diverted briefly to Shreveport while Dallas cleared out.)

    1. Only reason I dont use Delta more is because their miles program works with American Express and lot of places, especially internationally, don’t take AMEX.
